Because you can relate to it well, if you are a "Born Again Christian"...If your not...you will only gain a "head knowledge" and not a Heart Knowledge."2. I like it because the Proverbs are so awesome in their own right. They cover just about everything in our lives that we come up against...for instance..."you shall not change an established land marker" Proverbs 23:10 Deut 19:14 27:17 Amplified version. If you walk in the woods and come upon wooden posts (even if they are lying on the ground) they will have barbed wire attached, and you can trace them out of the woods to someones property. You are NOT to move them to gain more footage.3. I really recommend Spurgeon's: "Sermons on Proverbs" and then go to your Bible and read Proverbs (after the Psalm's) and have a daily FEAST! Tah Dah! recommend Proverbs to anyone who has had a "SPIRITUAL BIRTH"
From the Prince of Preachers an excellent collection of his sermons from one of the most instructive and illuminating books of the Bible as it applies to life experiences. Thanks to Public Domain this book is available to virtually anyone who wants it. Truly a blessing.
I already have other selections from Spurgeon, and wanted to have a great understanding of Proverbs. Spurgeon liinks most of this book to his prevailing message of faith and grace (NT) so that is interesting. Because of this, it is really not a stand a lone commentary on Proverbs, but it does shed new light on it. I just digest sections at a time rather than trying to go through the whole work in a short period. If you love All of Grace, you will enjoy this as well.
It's been great to read Spurgeons sermons from the 1800's into today's culture. He write about foundational issues within the church and Christianity that still need to be addressed today. Human nature never changes - and the need for God's solutions is still relevant today. I'm so thankful men and women of faith, like Spurgeon and the fathers of our faith before them, took the time to document their research and findings so that we can continue to benefit from their writings today.
I got this book as we were studying Proverbs in my Bible Study class at church. The sermons are truly beautiful and very inspiring. Some things, like beautiful verbiage never change. Granted some of the language was a bit dated, but if you can get by that, you'll enjoy and appreciate the fantastic sermons. This really helped me in my study to get another perspective on things that affect all of us.
I read a chapter of proverbs each day and as a supplement to it I purchased this book by Spurgeon. The book is very well written, straight forward, and incredibly insightful! This is a must for anyone wanting to delve deeper into the book of Proverbs in the Bible!
Quotes from this entry include:“At the very outset of the Christian life these two things should be very distinct with you —sin which has ruined you, and Christ who has saved you.â€â€œWhen you and I first began to do good by telling out the gospel, we labored under the delusion that as soon as our neighbors heard of the blessed way of salvation they would joyfully receive it, and be saved in crowds. We have long ago seen that pleasant delusion dispelled; we find that our position is that of the serpent-charmer with the deaf adder, charm we ever so wisely, men will not hear so as to receive the truth.â€â€œWe may always rest assured that truth never contradicts itself; but as nobody knows anything yet about geology—for its theory is a dream and an imagination altogether—we will wait till the philosophers settle their own private matters, being confident that when they find out the truth, it will be quite consistent with what God has revealed.â€â€œSacramentarianism is a lie, and that there is no salvation but in the uplifted cross of Christ, and no salvation through ceremonies but only through a simple faith in him who loved us and gave himself for us.â€â€œWe are prepared, I hope, to die for the doctrine of justification by faith, and to assert before all adversaries that salvation is not of works; but we also confess that we are justified by a faith which produces works, and if any man has a faith which does not produce good works it is the faith of devils. Saving faith appropriates the finished work of the Lord Jesus and so saves by itself alone, for we are justified by faith without works; but the faith which is without works cannot bring salvation to any man. We are saved by faith without works, but not by a faith that is without works, for the real faith that saves the soul works by love and purifies the character.â€â€œBetter trust a lawyer with your property than a priest with your soul. Better hand your purse to a highwayman upon the heath than commit your soul to a Romish priest.â€â€œThough many a day has come to thee, think not that another will certainly arrive. Days are not like links of a chain; one does not ensure the other. We have one, but we may never see its fellow; each may be the last of its kind. Each springs of a separate birth. There are no twin days. To-day hath no brother, it stands alone, and to-morrow must come alone, and the next and the next also must be born into this world without a brother. We must never look upon two days at once, nor expect that a whole herd of days shall be brought forth at one time.â€â€œSome have supposed that there may be efficacy in baptismal water, or in sacramental emblems, or in priestly incantations, or in confession to a priest—one who asks them to disclose their secret wickedness to him and betrays a morbid avidity to make his breast the sewer into which all kinds of uncleanness should be emptied. Be not deceived. There is nothing in these ordinances of man, or these tricks of Romish priestcraft (I had almost said of witchcraft, the two are so much alike) to excuse the folly of those who are beguiled by them.â€
