About the Author
Mark Herrmann graduated from Princeton University in 1979 and The University of Michigan Law School (Order of the Coif, Michigan Law Review) in 1983. After graduation, he clerked for The Honorable Dorothy W. Nelson in the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Mark practiced at Steinhart & Falconer in San Francisco from 1984 to 1989, when he moved to Cleveland and joined the international law firm Jones Day, where he is now a partner.

This is one of funniest and (maybe sadly) honest writings on working in this line of work. When starting my new job, I thought it’d be worthwhile to read something about my career to adjust my expectations and know what the demands of my career are.First, the book is quite concise, which is nice because I did not want to spend weeks reading about my job, while I actually have to do my job.Second, the writing is fun. The author clearly intended this to be a fun take on this profession and he gets it done.Third, the advice is useful and pragmatic. While there was nothing earth-shattering, I thought it was nice to see things from a partner’s perspective. Now that I’ve done some of the mistakes the author warns about, I can say that he’s absolutely right.In any case, it’s a quick, fun, sadly true read on life in big law and worth reading.
On the inside cover of this book, one of the reviewers wrote: "This is the only book I've ever read that I wish had been longer." I could not agree more. In just 135 pages, this book provides very practical, and often times, humorous, advice on how to succeed in the first few years of practicing law. Mark Herrmann tells it like it is. No B.S. From basic tips on persuasive writing techniques to advice on how to build a practice, this book has it all. I will keep it near my desk for the rest of my career. In my opinion, every young attorney should read this book - especially those working in firms that represent large companies. I will recommend it to new associates every year. 5 out of 5 stars.
It's a little book, but filled with excruciatingly useful knowledge. It's a must-read for every new law grad, but beware, you must have a functional sarcasm-detector if you're going to get anything out of it!

Honestly, this small pamphlet-style legal advice/self-help book will teach you more than your entire legal writing first year course.
I have to congratulate Mark Hermann on this fantastic book, which is published by the American Bar Association. When I passed the bar exam and was admitted to practice law in Florida back in 2004, my father gave me this book as a gift. I read it in a single sitting and have re-read it several times since.The information in this book is critical to any new lawyer who takes a job for a law firm or any other type of organization that represents clients, especially in court. The Curmudgeon, a partner in Mr. Hermann's fictional book, walks you, the new associate, through the daily life of the private practice of law, imparting his curmudgeonly wisdom at every stage. Every critical element of private law practice is covered -- from how to do effective research, how to write billing time entries, to the different roles (and statuses) of people in the organization's power structure. You even get to spend an entire chapter with the Curmudgeon's secretary, who explains to you exactly what the functions and responsibilities of legal support staff are. Do NOT expect the Curmudgeon's secretary to fetch you coffee!Today I am The Curmudgeon. Nearly everything that Hermann's Curmudgeon says in this book, I expect and believe today. That is why the first thing that any new employee of my law firm gets, along with signing their W-4, I-9, and other initial employment documents, is a copy of this book. I keep a stock of at least four or five on hand and occasionally give them away to others in the legal community whom I believe could benefit from reading it.I've read dozens of self help books related to the practice (and business) of law, but of all of them, this one is the most important. I highly recommend it not only to lawyers, but to anyone who works for or with lawyers or in a law firm or legal organization.
I read this as a 3L and I greatly wish I had read it my first year. The book is written towards an entering associate in the litigation section of a firm. However, the advice is very applicable to any attorney or law student. The advice is pragmatic and does not apologize for its approach. No punches are pulled and it is nice to read an honest opinion of the practice of law.
