Some might think that the history of Canada would be a dull, colorless subject, but that is far from the case. Our northern neighbor over the course of centuries rose from its first settlements in the North American wilderness to being an important and respected nation, and Conrad Black chronicles that story in "Rise to Greatness."Black recalls the colonization of the areas that would become Canada, with the competition of the British and French for land in North America. The birth of the United States had a marked effect on the northern half of the continent, and the author shows how the combination of British and French character that has always marked Canada was necessary for the nation to be born and to survive. The nineteenth century saw Canada come into being as a separate nation. Canada was under the threat of American expansion during that time, especially during the War of 1812, but the country performed the necessary balancing act with regard to relations with both Britain and America to gain more and more independence and expand westward by century's end.Black recalls the great leaders that Canada had in the nineteenth century who founded the country, and those in the twentieth who shepherded the country as it faced both world wars, the Great Depression, the Cold War, and the battle over Quebec separatism. The author is strong in analyzing elections and political history, and offers his opinion concerning the performance of each prime minister. The author asserts that Canada has come into its own as never before in the twenty-first century, and closes with reflections and prospects concerning the nation. Black is erudite to say the least, not shying away from using unfamiliar words and challenging the vocabularies of even serious readers. American readers will appreciate the author's mature, balanced view of Canada's vaunted health-care system. At over 1000 pages, this is a long read, but a rewarding one for anyone would better understand a country that has gained in prestige and importance and will likely continue to do so throughout the twenty-first century.
Right off the bat, the foreword states that Mr. Black is qualified to write a book about Canadian history because he is a successful businessman... That should raise a red flag. And indeed, it soon become evident that the author is anything but a qualified historian. This is a book written by a rich white businessman obsessed with power and powerful men. This is the only way he seems to understand history. To make matters worst, his views are sometimes reminiscent of those of 19th century physiognomists, rooted mostly in prejudice and misinterpreted partial truths, views which very few educated mind would be able to seriously consider. But Mr. Black does not seek the truth or historical facts. He is entirely absorbed by something else: power. This book reviews Canadian history through its great political leaders - or rather, Mr. Black's distorted and highly imaginative perception of them. There is very little about the people, their struggle, their culture - all of those things are relegated to supporting roles. The focus of this book is those "formidable men" as the author constantly refers to them, and each of them is analyzed, admired, critiqued and catalogued according to his own warped understanding of history. As such, it should not surprise anyone that Native Americans are mostly ignored and dismissed as a superstitious stone age culture. Mr. Black's view of slavery and blacks are equally archaic and misinformed. Actually, I have seen history books of less than 300 pages that managed to cover much longer periods of the history of North America while also painting a much more elaborated portrait of Native Americans, Inuits, Blacks, and French and English Canadians. Mind you, those were the work of actual historians, not some rich dilettante fantasizing about powerful men.The sad thing is that, this could still be an interesting book if it was not so biased and misinformed. It is relatively well-written and some passages are pleasant to read. But since the author focuses mainly on his opinions, disregard some facts and dismisses some other as being debunked without ever bothering to back up his opinions, we are left with some kind of quasi-homoerotic +1000 pages lecture on powerful men.
As one who grew up on the U.S. Canadian border and frequently traveled across it while my age was still in single digits, I was delighted to find a book that told me so much about varied experiences of the multi-ethnic Canadians. Rise to Greatness is written well enough to justify its 1,000 pages of text. I read it to the end and was rewarded more and more as I did so.
I haven't finished this book yet, but it is very dry. If you want a reference of all the Governor's General and explorers, etc., it's probably a very good reference book, but I keep feeling that there are some terrifically good stories about life in early Canada that I'm missing. It's an exciting place today, and I'm sure it always has been. The book is very well written, just old, dry facts.
It is very informative and there is a lot of details.... You have to love history ....which I do. But it is a long read. Conrad knows his history and he loves to write. Thank you.
Great read on a wonderful subject. A terrific writer with concise and precise thinking. Every Canadian should read this.
Not his best work. It's too easy to get lost in the details and lose sight of the narrative in this history of our great country.
Even an American could appreciation this work.
