This is the 1972 updated version of J. B. Phillips' wonderful paraphrase (into the modern English of his time) translation of the New Testament. Phillips was a distinguished Church of England clergyman and teacher. The first edition was written for young people he was teaching during the perilous times of World War II. The translation get across the meaning of the gospels and other NT books in modern English without being overly colloquial. It's very illuminating to read a much earlier translation (say, the Geneva Bible or the King James) and then read the same passage in Phillips' translation. The language in the King James is beautiful (in the same way that Shakespeare's language is beautiful), but unless your're a scholar of Jacobean English, you will miss a lot of the meaning. Phillips does not use numbered verses, so his translation is probably best for reading rather than study. Highly recommended.
***UPDATED 27/06/16. I last reviewed this Kindle ebook in on July 23 2014. It's now June 27 2016. The typos are still all there. So have such low pride in one's work that the typos have not been fixed in nearly 2 years is a real shame. This is not a big job for an editor. I have attached just the introduction to Matthew from the "look inside" sample online so you can see what I mean.Just ask yourself "What would jesuf do?" END OF UPDATE***Within 3 pages, here are the typos I discovered: "Swanagb", Dorset (should be Swanage), "Gospelfreely", "jesuf" (should be "Jesus"), "Gospe's" (should be Gospel's). I did not continue reading. Glad Kindle has a return policy!I had been waiting for a long time for Phillip's NT to come out on Kindle, having heard it quoted and recommended so many times. For a NT that cost nearly 12 dollars, you would think that a proof-reader could have been hired.I hope these issues will be rectified, and that a Table of Contents that hyperlinks to chapters (not just books) will be provided. In the world of today where so many Bible publishers are getting it right and publishing excellent and error-free complex study Bibles, I'm sure it's not too much to ask!
This was absolutely not proof read. The is often spelled "die", them is often spelled "diem". one early chapter has sentences broken by slashes. I have a hardback copy of the original version which has subject heading set apart by opening verse numbers. With no such aids in this revision it is very difficult to navigate. What I am giving one star to is something that not enough effort was put into the finished. product. I can only hope the hardback of this isn't as messed up as the kindle edition. I have turned to my faith in a good, loving God. However, I'm not a biblical scholar so I turned to The New Testament Modern English. When I read about Jesus' journey and believes and experiences of his Disciplines in Modern English, I understand and it has a positive impact on my life.
If you can get through the errors in scanning the manuscript, this is a nice translation. But why should anyone have to pay $11 for a draft scan of this book with errors like 'die apogsles' ? The word The is usually rendered 'die'. In fact, the book is littered with errors. Not one person who speaks English has ever laid an eye on this disastrous scan after it was scanned.This should be labeled 'draft' and sold for 99 cents. It's insulting!Bibles generally are cumbersome on the Kindle. It's hard to look up footnotes and difficult to find compatible verses. This is no different.I liked the easy reading style, though. But it's completely overshadowed by the mass of scan errors.
