If you want the rest of the story that the user guide from Video Studio Pro X5(VSX5) didn't tell you, then you should pick up this book. Depending on your level of knowledge of video, editing, and Corel's previous Video Studio incarnations, you may be able to skip some of the first three chapters. I have owned VSX2 but the info included was good for me to go through. Starting in Chapter 4, the author starts to get into the meat of his book by taking you step-by-step through his lessons. These lessons are available for download on a website provided in the book, so you can work through them with the author's instructions. I learned a lot just in chapter four.Topics covered were how to:-add content to your project through the various methods allowed in VSX5-adjust a clip's duration-trim a clip once or multiple times-split a clip-turn a normal speed clip to slow motion or speed it up-correct the color of a clip-to use still images in your videoLike I said that was just Chapter 4!Without covering the whole book, some of the other topics included therein are:-Adding audio and/or manipulating the audio included on your video-Adding video effects and transitions to your project-Using video filters-Adding titles and title effects-Making screen capture videos-Web authoring in HTML5-Stop Motion and Time-Lapse video-How to share your videos through DVD, HD DVD, or on the webThe information provided is very helpful, and will save you many, many hours of trying to learn ALL the abundant features available of VSX5 on your own!
I found this to be a helpful addition to learning how to use VS pro X5. That said, the problem with this book is too many of the illustrations are too small to be of much use to the reader. It would have helped if the author had used the magnifier tool in windows to enlarge some of the shots of settings. The audio editing section is not clear about how to raise the entire level of a sound track. If you use the audio editor function to raise the level at the very beginning of a segment, then the whole track audio level is raised, however if you do this when the timeline curser is in the middle of a track then the sound ramps up to that point and down from that point back to the original level. This is a software behavior issue but the author wasn't clear about this particular point. I found that DVD menu section wasn't particularly clear either about creating a custom chapter menu.All said, this is a very good book for learning the basics of the software. If the users supplement this book by watching the many fine how -to videos on YouTube they will be well on the way to becoming VS pro X5 masters.
Even though I have used other editing programs, I found this book to be an absolute necessity for really understanding and getting the best out of my Corel Video Studio x4 Ultimate software. There are so many features in the program, that it could take you years to figure it out on your own. With this book, you get tons of useful information right at your fingertips. The book is well organized and very easy to use. My only quibble is that the author could have spent more time and detail on keyframing. That is such an essential concept in video editing, that it should have occupied an entire chapter, rather than part of a chapter. It's difficult for the novice to fully understand, and each editing program has it's own little keyframing "quirks." The typical beginner will take a while to master it. Having said that, I am very happy that I bought this book, and I use it as a reference daily (after having read it cover-to-cover). Well worth the money if you want the most out of this really neat video editing program.
So happy I added this book when I ordered Corel VideoStudio X4 Pro software. I am a novice first video editing software I have purchased. The book is an easy read, covers all steps necessary for each area. I skipped right to the back of the book to what I was interested in learning and had no problem completing 3 projects first time through, even though I hadn't read the previous chapters. Clear colorful screen shots to follow. Set up for an easy reference to what your looking for. Corel VideoStudio X4 Pro software comes with a good paper book user guide with the software. The Picture Yourself making Creative Movies with Corel VideoStudio Pro X4 is a motivational, wonderful addition to have.
The manual that comes with VideoPro x4 describes what each command but does but it does not provide sense of how how all the commands fit together to make a movie. Its a bit like reading a dictionary in an effort to understand literature. The Picture Yourself Making Creative Movies provides that missing insight.I gave this manual 4 stars because it is written such that it requires the reader to start at page 1 and read each page in order to progress through the subjects. I tend to jump around documentation reading only the sections with which I am unfamiliar. This manual builds a sample movie project that becomes more involved in later chapters. My "jump around" approach makes this difficult because it assumes I, the reader, has already built earlier parts of the project.
I've spent a bunch of money buying different video studio products. They all seemed to fall short. This one is quite powerful with tons of options. The product itself is still a bit over my head but I have been able to take video I've pulled off of VHS tapes and transfer them either to CD or DVDs, so this product definitely works. My daughter understands the program better than I and can do a lot more with it. At the time of this writing, X5 is out. I recommend Corel VideoStudio Pro over other similar software products.
