Each of us looks for ways to find relief from suffering. We want to know that mental and physical ease are possible. Some of our modes of seeking respite from pain are unconscious, some are carried out with more awareness."Mindfulness as Medicine" is a beautiful book, written as an example of one woman's process of discovering true and lasting peace. She has endured much discomfort in her life, and those of us reading this book are taken by the hand, and guided through a gentle sharing of ways to bring ease to oneself on the deepest level.I enjoyed the weaving of personal reflection and story with practical and do-able teachings. Sister Dang Nghiem gives us pieces of her personal life, yet the book overall is a healing manual for those who appreciate a gentle path.Though Sister Dang Nghiem is a Buddhist Nun in the tradition of beloved monk, Thich Nhat Hanh, this book can be a friend to anyone, from any tradition or from no tradition who sincerely wants to transform pain to inner peace. One of my favorite aspects of this book is very practical: the book has larger print than most, and there is spacing between the lines. The layout of the book encourages the cultivation of spaciousness in one's moment-to moment life.An example of Sister Dan Nghiem's life-teaching is on equanimity. She is a trained physician, and the task that she chose most to do in her community is cleaning toilets. I am grateful that she brings light to this important quality of cultivating peace."Mindfulness as Medicine" is a book I recommend to anyone suffering from trauma, physical or emotional/mental discomforts. May all beings know the truest joy and peace ~

Gave this book to a friend,(Southern Baptist), who had the same "rare" Lyme Tick disease as the author, a Medical Doctor turned Bhuddist Nun. His health was deteriorating and there was no known cure!Sister Dang Nghiem cured herself by using the techniques shared in this book! He said it took several days to learn how to use the visualizations and meditations, and then the results came quickly. Within weeks he was off his medications, and an MRI scan revealed that the swelling in his brain was greatly diminished! Her techniques might possibly assist people with auto immune diseases? Fibromyalgia/ fatigue?

This book is quiet and beautiful. Reading it is like sitting with a friend drinking tea and sharing stories. Hard lessons for learning to live an authentic life while living with chronic pain and disease are offered with gentle and friendly words.

A moving personal account of a doctor who became a nun and how she engages her meditation and spiritual practices to help in her healing.

Beautiful and inspiring. This book has helped me to better understand the teaching's of Thich Nhat Hanh and the Buddha. I have a tendency to get caught in the conceptual interpretation of the teachings, but now I can see more clearly how they relate to my own personal experience.

Very thought provoking book full of insight and wisdom.

I selected this book because the author was a physician before she became a Buddhist nun. She also contracted Lyme disease in 2011. Since I am interested in healing and we have a family member who contracted Lyme disease last summer, I thought this book would be a perfect fit.Ultimately, Mindfulness as Medicine has very little to do with any type of disease. It is about the author’s experience as a nun and learning to be compassionate toward herself. The essence of the book is that you can’t be helpful and loving to others unless you’ve learned to love yourself. You do this by being aware of what’s going on in your mind and body, and treating yourself with kindness. This book is an interesting memoir and a look inside Buddhist beliefs. I think it would be helpful for anyone who has a chronic condition and is looking for a way to accept their disease and take care of themselves. It is not a book you would read, however, if you were looking for any kind of medical insight into your illness

This writing is just too simple for me. I also kept feeling that Sister Dang Nghiem could have given something to the world by staying in medicine. She took space from some other deserving applicant but now she walks away. It isn't easy to get into med school. This is personal for me, so this is why I am negative about the book and author.
