I purchased this book because I work with foster parents on a daily basis. There is always some foster homes that are not appropriate and can cause the child more harm. Those are the ones that everyone hears about on the news. However, there are also those homes that genuinely care for the children they are entrusted with, and do everything in their power to help the child heal from the trauma that brought them into foster care. Ms. Harrison does a remarkable job of describing me every day situations that can happen in foster care. I recommend this book to all of my foster families, especially the ones with limited experience. It is not always easy taking care of someone else's children, especially the ones who have never experienced what a loving family looks like. I love how Ms. Harrison is honest and shows that even the best intentioned foster parents are not perfect. As a social worker, dealing with the system on a daily basis is not easy. We are bound by the laws of the state and the policies of the agencies that employ us. It is very difficult to work with foster children and their parents knowing what the child has been through but it has to be done every day. If you have ever considered fostering or adopting from the foster care system, I recommend that you read this book first.

I dont know if anything I have ever read has ever made me cry this hard. I highly recommend it. We are working on becoming foster parents and I have been reading like crazy to find every piece of info I can. If I could only recommend one thing it would be this book. It covered a lot about foster care and tore my heart to shreds. Before you foster you need to be realistic and know what you can and cannot handle and when to say no. This hammered that into me all the more.

I read this book in two days. Absolutely wonderful. As someone who is highly interested in adoption through foster care, this was a phenomenal book for me to read as I begin to research and read others' first-hand experiences. I cried both heartbreaking tears and incredibly happy tears while reading this book. The author details how foster care is such a selfless and exhausting life journey - but one that leaves a lasting impact on all lives involved. GREAT read!

What an excellent book! Our family is planning on becoming a foster family in the next year or so and this book gives a terrific inside look - the good, the bad, and the ugly. I've researched this a lot and this book gave me situations and things to think about that I haven't seen addressed anywhere else. The book is also well written and genuinely interesting to read.

I am a newer foster mother and this is the first book that I have read that felt like it was honest enough to describe my experiences! From now on when a friend mentions being interested in becoming a foster parent I will tell them to read this book to see what the experience is really like.

I could not put the book down. My heart goes out to all the children who have to suffer, and will continue to suffer as the rest of us go on with our own lives being grateful that there are people and programs to help. Unfortunately it is not nearly enough. Kathy did an excellent job of making me truly better understand the vital role of Foster Parents. I truly felt her emotions through all the joy described as well as the pain and mundane.I hope this opens some eyes for people so that they can find some way to help. There is not enough money, energy, compassion, understanding or love for our own children in this country and that is sad. Children deserve to be children and have a childhood.

I loved this book and the author's genuine, heartfelt and honest perspective. I read it because I was curious about fostering children and it gave much insight to the foster system in the US- pros and cons- and was a real eye opener about the difficulties and joys that come with fostering and parenting these children. There are many personal stories about the children that Kathy fostered and adopted, and how she and her husband coped and responded. Some stories in the book will break your heart and can be discouraging to realize all the bad that goes on in our world that get foster children into the system in the first place. However people like Kathy Harrison make this world a better place and this book is an encouragement to anyone who believes in children and their worth. This book was a great read that I could not put down.

If you are especially curious about what it's really like to be a foster parent, this book is perfect. This book is sad, frustrating, heartwarming and so real. Kathy Harrison, author and experienced foster mom, manages to stay objective while confessing her true and human feelings. I could completely relate to her and felt like she could easily be a friend of mine. Just like Kathy's feelings for the foster care system, as a teacher, I can't find anyone to actually blame for our "disgraceful" public school system either. Kathy is a very empathetic and succinct writer. Her story was so interesting that I finished the book in a few days, which is really good for me.We have been considering for quite some time the possibility of fostering or adopting a small number of children. Now, I have a better idea what it might be like. We still haven't ruled out the idea, but I certainly know that I could never be as dedicated to motherhood as Kathy is. I would have to find a "happy-medium", which I'm still not sure is even possible. At least this book can help anyone who is seriously thinking about foster care. I hope everyone who cares about kids reads this book, and those who have a "not-so-subtle sense of elitism" might also gain some much needed realistic perspective on our public systems. It's going to take a lot of understanding to mend the circle and everyone needs do more for the next generations. Like Kathy, I know I will continue to try to do my part.
